BNPP AM Alts announces sale of Barcelona’s historic Hotel Princesa Sofía
Sale follows a three-year investment and repositioning program at the 465-room hotel.
BNP Paribas Asset Management Alts (BNPP AM Alts), the largest alternatives asset manager in Europe and a global leader with c.€300 billion of assets under management, announces, on behalf of its clients, the sale of Barcelona’s historic Hotel Princesa Sofía, a 465-room 5* hotel, to RIU Hotels & Resorts.
The property was acquired by BNPP AM Alts in 2023 in a joint venture between BNPP AM Alts and Spanish-based partner Blasson Property Investments. Since then, the owners have undertaken an extensive repositioning programme to enhance the hotel’s specifications, amenities and sustainability credentials to better leverage the city’s continued emergence as one of Europe’s preeminent conference and events destinations.
With 465 keys, including 49 suites and a penthouse, the hotel now offers an extensive amenity set, including five food and beverage outlets, two of which are third-party operated destination restaurants, 3,700 sqm of meeting and events space across multiple rooms including a plenary room with the ability to accommodate up to 870 guests, a full-service spa, gym and outdoor swimming pool. The hotel further benefits from a LEED Gold certification.
Throughout the ownership period, the property has delivered resilient income, underpinned by Barcelona’s favourable supply-demand fundamentals, a robust post-pandemic recovery and its position within a leading tourism and MICE market. Its appeal to a diversified mix of corporate and leisure guests is further reinforced by its proximity to Camp Nou and the ongoing transformation of the surrounding district into a major sports and entertainment destination.
